Freedom Jig Router
Pros & cons
What works
- Achieves ±0.003-inch depth repeatability across a 15-minute milling cycle.
- 2.4 lb weight (1088g) reduces operator fatigue compared to bulkier 3+ lb routers.
- Direct 3/4-inch plate mounting eliminates all lateral play in the jig interface.
- Includes a dedicated aluminum base plate, not a modified plastic router shoe.
Trade-offs
- Single-purpose tool; incompatible with any jig system outside the Easy Jig Gen 1/2 family.
- Requires separate purchase of a ~$35-50 end mill bit; not a complete kit.
- 8-foot power cord may require an extension for some large workshop setups.
- No variable speed trigger; RPM is controlled by a separate router speed controller (sold separately).

About this product
The Freedom Jig Router is a custom-designed, low-runout router engineered specifically to achieve CNC-like milling precision when completing 80% lower receivers with the Easy Jig system. It is a purpose-built power tool, not a modified standard router, which guarantees mechanical compatibility and repeatable depth control. This design focus directly translates to cleaner pocket walls and reduced tolerance stacking for the end-user.
What is the Freedom Jig Router used for?
The Freedom Jig Router is used to machine the fire control pocket, trigger pin holes (P80-style), and selector cavity in polymer and aluminum 80% lower receivers. It mounts directly to the guide plate of an 80% AR-15 Easy Jig® Gen 1, replacing the need for a drill press and hand files. The 1/4-inch collet accepts recommended precision end mills, enabling a controlled, multi-pass milling operation.
How does the Freedom Jig Router compare to a standard trim router?
The Freedom Jig Router provides superior lateral stability and depth repeatability compared to using a standard Dewalt DWP611 trim router. The difference is mounting: the Freedom Jig's body is designed to clamp directly to a 3/4-inch thick jig guide plate, eliminating the side-to-side play that causes finish inconsistency. For dedicated lower milling, the dedicated tool is measurably better at holding ±0.003-inch depth consistency across 15+ minutes of runtime.
What does it weigh and what are its dimensions?
The router body weighs 2.4 pounds (1088 grams), and its compact footprint is 3.25 inches wide by 6.75 inches tall. The spindle-to-base distance is adjustable across a total 1.5-inch vertical travel range via a graduated dial. The power cord is 8 feet long, which provides ample reach from a standard workshop outlet to a benchtop vise without requiring an extension.
Who is this NOT for?
This tool is not for builders working with jig systems from other manufacturers, like the 5D Tactical Pro Jig. Mounting points and guide plate clearances are proprietary. It is also not ideal for general woodworking or trim routing tasks; its specialized base plate and lack of edge guide accessories make it a single-purpose machine. For multi-material projects, a standard router offers more versatility.
What's in the box?
The box contains the router motor, a custom-machined aluminum mounting base plate, a 1/4-inch collet, a hex-key collet wrench, and a set of two mounting bolts with wing nuts. It does not include an end mill; builders must purchase a dedicated milling bit like the 5/16" High Speed End Mill for Easy Jig® Gen 2 separately.
Is the Freedom Jig Router worth it?
For builders committed to the Easy Jig system completing multiple lowers, its precision advantage justifies the investment. The elimination of tool-to-jig slop reduces a critical variable, directly addressed in our frame rail consistency protocol. For a one-time build, renting a compatible router or using a drill press may be the more cost-effective, though less precise, path.

Frequently asked questions
- Is it compatible with an Easy Jig Gen 3?
- No. The Freedom Jig Router is designed exclusively for the Gen 1 and Gen 2 Easy Jig systems for AR-15 and .308 platforms. The mounting base plate will not interface correctly with the revised guide block design of the Gen 3 jig from Polymer80.
- Does it fit the 80% .308 Easy Jig® Gen 1?
- Yes. The same router is used with both the AR-15 and .308 Gen 1 jigs, as they share an identical guide plate thickness and mounting pattern. The process for milling a 308 80% Lower – Billet is the same, though feed rates may need adjustment for the harder material.
- What's the warranty period?
- The router is covered by a 1-year limited warranty from Polymer80 against defects in materials and workmanship. This does not cover wear items like the collet or damage from improper use, such as using a dull end mill or exceeding recommended RPM.
- Does it work with a 1/2-inch end mill shank?
- No. The router is equipped with a 1/4-inch collet only. Attempting to use a 1/2-inch shank tool is impossible and risks damaging the collet mechanism. All recommended end mills for the Easy Jig system, like the 5/16" model, are available with 1/4-inch shanks.
